Sydney Smith

Hey there! My name is Sydney and I am from a town a little North of Baltimore, MD, I am the owner/lead roaster for Revival Coffee Roasting Co. On the side I nanny and work as barista at OneDo Coffee Roasters in Canton, Baltimore. I’m super excited to be part of this community and I hope to offer some positive vibes for all those who read this :)

What is your passion and why?

This is a hard question to answer because I would say I am passionate about many things in life, however, to keep things simple I would say I am passionate about people. Growing up, I didn’t have the easiest life and as a result, I was pretty introverted for most of my life. For years I felt lost in the crowd and I never really felt “known” by anyone.  By my early 20s I started to get out of my comfort zone and break out of my shell. I learned that my hardships had kept me humble and actually gave me a unique perspective on life. As a result, I look deeper into pretty much everything, especially people. I made it my life mission to get to know people and to hopefully encourage them embrace their lives. We all have walked different paths in life, some more difficult than others, but it’s the messy, imperfect, raw life stories that make us unique as people. What’s not to love about that?

What is Revival Coffee Roasting Co.?

Revival Coffee Roasting Co. is a small faith-based micro-coffee roasting company out of Baltimore with a two-part focus. The first focus is around specialty coffee. I selectively source my green coffee and roast everything small batches.  The second part of my company is purpose driven and based off of our passion for the local community.  I love to give back by partnering with local non-profit organizations and try to assist with their events or fundraisers whenever I can!

What inspired you to start the company?

I’ve always loved good coffee and modern coffee shop vibes, but I actually started my business after an encounter with a homeless women (Heather) on a freezing cold night outside of a Starbucks. I was in my last year of college and I was dirt poor, yet I was the only one that offered to buy Heather a hot drink. When we were in the shop I noticed people just staring at Heather with odd looks. I imagine they were creating their own story for her and making assumptions. After that night, I had time to process everything, including how uncomfortable Heather felt. I honestly just felt pissed off the more than anything. I’m so tired of living in a world that seems to be full of selfish, judgmental people. I chose the name Revival because I hope for a revival in humanity. I always wanted to open my own coffee shop and create a culture where everyone feels welcome, wanted, and known, but also a place where we are known for our community and giving back. Maybe I’ll make it happen one day. Fingers crossed :)

What are some of your creative goals you are working on?

Honestly, right now I am in a weird spot. Running a business is not easy and I have a lot on my plate right now. So I guess right now, I am just at a place where I am trying to push through and stay positive :)

Any side hustles that involve your passion?

I recently just picked up a side gig at this new coffee shop in Canton, Baltimore. I love roasting coffee and building my own brand, but I also crave daily conversations with customers. Glad to be back at it :)

What does our brand, Coffee & Create, mean to you?

When I learned about Coffee & Create, I immediately related to the story and the mission statement behind the brand. I feel like all my life I’ve hustled in some sort of way. Starting my own business has been by far one of the most difficult challenges in my life, but I’m doing it (or I’m at least trying) and always with good coffee in hand. I also think the community behind Coffee & Create sets this brand apart. Most of us are trying to hustle in this world and accomplish some sort of goal or dream. It’s awesome to have a place to go not only for inspiration, but to also find like-minded creative individuals.
